Michael C. Doering

Mr. Doering represents clients in connection with estate and tax planning, including the drafting of wills, revocable living trusts, irrevocable trusts, powers of attorney and advance directives.  Mr. Doering also represents individual executors, administrators and other personal representatives in connection with the administration of estates and trusts, including the preparation of estate, inheritance, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax returns.

Mr. Doering also devotes a substantial part of his practice to business transactions, including the formation and representation of closely-held corporations, limited liability companies (LLCs) and partnerships. This portion of Mr. Doering’s practice includes the preparation of stock purchase or buy-sell agreements, family business succession plans, real estate contracts, mineral interest transfers, the sale of businesses and the negotiation of oil and gas leases on behalf of mineral interest holders. Clients include owners of a variety of businesses, with a substantial number consisting of family farms, cattle ranches and feed yards.  

Mr. Doering is a Certified Public Accountant, a graduate of Kansas State University (1975), and received a Juris Doctor from the University of Kansas School of Law (1978).

Jacob Cunningham

Jacob Cunningham is a shareholder in the firm and practices primarily in the areas of estate planning, business transactional law, banking law, municipal law, and tax law. He provides comprehensive legal services in estate planning, real estate acquisitions, contract law, employment matters, and complex litigation. He develops and executes estate plans, facilitates property transactions, and drafts and negotiates contracts and leases. Jacob also advises clients on employment contracts, assists with terminations, and guides on employee handbooks. His litigation work includes drafting pleadings, mediation, and judgment enforcement. He establishes legal entities to support favorable tax and liability outcomes, and advises banking clients on loan analysis, foreclosure actions, and debt enforcement.

His educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Business Administration from the University of Kansas (2006) and a J.D. from Washburn University (2010). He was admitted to the Kansas Bar and the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas in 2010, and he remains active with the Kansas Bar Association.

Jacob and his wife, Jennifer Cunningham (a law partner at DGC), are the parents of four wonderful and active children, Brodie, Bennett, Claire and Camden.  Jacob regularly coaches his children in youth sports and enjoys vacationing with them.  Jacob is also an active runner and enjoys spending time outdoors.

Jennifer Cunningham

Jennifer has been with Doering, Grisell & Cunningham since 2022. Jennifer was with the City of Garden City from 2012 through the end of 2021, holding the title of Deputy City Manager upon her departure. In that capacity, Jennifer led the public safety team including all fire and police personnel and served as the acting Fire Chief for a year. At times during her tenure with the City she also led Municipal Court, Prosecution and Information Technologies & Communications. Prior to joining the City of Garden City team she worked for the Finney County Attorney as an Assistant County Attorney prosecuting Child in Need of Care cases and criminal cases. Jennifer’s primary practice with Doering, Grisell & Cunningham is in Municipal and School Law, but she also does employment law, work for non-profits, family law, prosecution, and takes on other cases  in gap areas as needed for the firm.  

Jennifer is a native of Lamar, Colorado. She received her Bachelor's degree from Colorado State University in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and Real Estate and her Juris Doctor from Washburn University. Jennifer’s time in municipal management brings a unique perspective to clients. Jennifer is an innovative leader who has an established record of taking on complicated projects and delivering outstanding results.

James Dummermuth

James Dummermuth is an associate attorney in the firm who practices in the areas of municipal law, real estate law, business law, estate planning, and non-profit law.

His educational background includes a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Washburn University (2007) and a J.D. from Creighton University School of Law (2010). He was admitted to State of Kansas and the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas .

Outside of work, James is passionate about family, fitness, and fun. He enjoys spending quality time with his blended family, engaging in outdoor activities such as tennis, cycling, and hiking and indoor hobbies such as gaming. He prioritizes a healthy lifestyle and supports his children's pursuits in robotics, orchestra, theater, tennis, and soccer. In his free time, James enjoys traveling and exploring local food, music, and comedy scenes. He is also a dedicated fan of the Creighton Bluejays and Scuderia Ferrari.

Michala joined the Doering, Grisell & Cunningham team as a legal assistant in 2016.  Prior to joining the firm, Michala worked at the Finney County District Court.  Michala truly loves the legal system and has a desire to help people.  She and her husband are raising four active children. When she is not in the office, she enjoys spending quality time with her family and attending as many of her children’s sporting events, as possible. Just as is the case with the three other legal assistants in the firm, her husband is a passionate fire fighter for the Garden City Fire Department. Michala and her family are an integral piece to the team at Doering, Grisell & Cunningham.

Ashlee Donovan

Ashlee joined the Doering, Grisell & Cunningham team as a legal assistant in 2022.  She has primarily assisted with estate planning, real estate and probate clients. Ashlee has the kind of personality that you cannot help but love. She is committed to the clients of the firm and strives to be an active and supportive presence throughout the entire legal process. There are very few faces she doesn’t recognize and works hard to get to know each client by name. In her personal time, Ashlee enjoys spending time with her husband and their two children, baking the best cookies in town, traveling and being on the go. Just as is the case with the three other legal assistants in the firm, her husband is a passionate fire fighter for the Garden City Fire Department. Ashlee and her family have been a breath of fresh air to the team at Doering, Grisell & Cunningham.

Timberly Turpin

Timberly joined the Doering, Grisell & Cunningham team as a legal assistant in 2024.  Timberly has worked with the community for several years, most recently in the Finney County Treasurer’s Office. Timbery has a heart for people and enjoys being able to help every person she encounters. Her bubbly personality and easy going nature makes her an easy fit for our team. We are excited for Timberly to learn and grow as she focuses her attention on Municipal and School Law. Typically, you can find Timberly with her family and friends outside of work. Just as is the case with the three other legal assistants in the firm, her husband is a passionate fire fighter for the Garden City Fire Department and has one child. Timberly and her family were an easy pick to join the team at Doering, Grisell & Cunningham.

Shannon Irsik

Shannon joined the Doering, Grisell & Cunningham team as a legal assistant in 2024. While she is new to our firm, Shannon has years of experience from previously working for the District Court and other local law firms. Shannon has been in Garden City long enough that she is very familiar with the community, our clients and the legal community. She has been a huge asset this year and we look forward to all she will bring to the firm. When she is not working you can find her watching Chiefs football, golfing and enjoying time with her family. Just as is the case with the three other legal assistants in the firm, her husband is a passionate fire fighter and the current Fire Chief for the Garden City Fire Department. Shannon and her family are maybe new to our team, but they fit as if they have always been a part of Doering, Grisell & Cunningham.

Trish joined the Doering, Grisell & Cunningham team in 2022.  Trish grew up in Garden City, Kansas where she met her husband and they raised their four children. When she is not in the office, she enjoys spending time with her family, helping others, outdoor walks and traveling. Trish and her husband own a local business called the Phone Doctor and Trish spent several years working for Main & Palmer Dentistry. Trish has been a huge asset to the DGC team.
